About the Position:

We are looking for a Head of Global Patents who will join the Legal & Compliance Department to lead the Company’s patent team, supporting the Company’s various research, technology, and business groups around the world.

Reporting directly to the Global Head of Intellectual Property, this role will be responsible for managing Marelli’s global patent portfolio, including protection and enforcement, patent litigation management and further developing and managing the Company’s in-house patent team.

This role is located in Southfield, MI. This is a hybrid role.

Your Responsibilities will be:

• Managing and implementing Marelli’s global patent strategy, including assisting the Global Head of IP to guide business teams in all jurisdictions.
• Collaborating across business units and understanding product strategy and technology roadmaps to manage and implement Marelli’s patent strategy.
• Leading, building, developing, and managing a global patent team.
• Directing strategy and managing intellectual property litigation and proceedings in close cooperation with the Global Head of Intellectual Property.
• Working closely with engineering leadership to protect Marelli’s IP.
• Directing a full range of patent support functions (including patent preparation and prosecution, maintenance, and post-grant proceedings in the U.S. and other jurisdictions).
• Performing freedom-to-operate investigations, render opinions, and managing outside counsel in close cooperation with the Global Head of Intellectual Property.
• Managing the intellectual property budget for law firms and other IP-related expenditures.
• Contributing as needed on other matters for the legal team.

What Qualifications you will bring:

• A J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school (or the equivalent); high degree of academic achievement.
• Licensed to practice law in one or more U.S. states, either admission to the Michigan Bar or eligibility for in-house qualification in Michigan.
• At least 10 years of law firm and/or corporate legal department experience, including experience litigating and managing patent infringement cases.
• Experience managing international patent portfolios and overseeing global patent strategy, particularly in Europe, Asia, and South America.
• Background in software or electrical engineering and/or experience with software and electrical engineering patents is a plus.
• Experience managing a team.
• Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and judgment.
• Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent verbal and written skills.
• Ability to think strategically, effectively engage colleagues, and provide well-organized, thoughtful presentations to technical and non-technical members of senior management.
• Experience within the automotive industry, or experience and familiarity with the legal aspects of cybersecurity, and software are desirable and considered a plus.
