About the Position:
The Material Planning Supervisor is responsible for leading the material planning team to ensure timely availability of electronic components, raw materials, and production supplies required to support manufacturing operations.
This role oversees material requirements planning, inventory control, supplier follow-up, shortage management, and coordination with procurement, production, logistics, engineering, and customer planning teams.
The position plays a key role in maintaining production continuity, optimizing inventory levels, preventing line stoppages, and ensuring that planning activities are aligned with customer demand, production schedules, and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the material planning team.
- Ensure timely release and follow-up of material requirements based on production plans, customer demand, and MRP signals.
- Monitor component availability to support production schedules and prevent shortages or line interruptions.
- Review and manage inventory levels to achieve optimal balance between material availability and inventory targets.
- Coordinate with purchasing, suppliers, logistics, warehouse, production, and engineering teams to resolve material issues.
- Lead shortage meetings and drive action plans for critical materials.
- Analyze demand changes, forecast variations, and their impact on material availability.
- Ensure compliance with planning parameters, lead times, safety stock levels, minimum order quantities, and supplier constraints.
- Monitor supplier performance related to delivery commitments and escalate risks as needed.
- Support new product introductions, engineering changes, phase-in/phase-out activities, and end-of-life material planning.
- Maintain accurate data in ERP/MRP systems, including delivery dates, material status, and planning assumptions.
- Develop and track key performance indicators such as inventory turns, shortages, past due orders, schedule adherence, and supplier delivery performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve planning processes, reduce excess and obsolete inventory, and increase supply chain efficiency.
- Support internal and external audits related to materials planning and inventory management.
- Ensure team adherence to company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
- Coach, train, and develop material planners to strengthen team performance and technical capabilities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, Logistics, or related field.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in material planning, production planning, procurement, or supply chain roles.
- Previous experience in electronics manufacturing, automotive electronics, or high-mix manufacturing environments preferred.
- Experience supervising or coordinating planning teams is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of MRP/ERP systems and supply chain planning processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools.
Technical Skills
- Material Requirements Planning/MRP.
- ERP system knowledge, such as SAP, Oracle, QAD, JD Edwards, or similar.
- Inventory management and control.
- Demand analysis and production schedule interpretation.
- Supplier follow-up and shortage management.
- BOM structure and engineering change control understanding.
- Lead time, safety stock, MOQ, and planning parameter management.
- KPI tracking and reporting.
- Root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis.
Key Performance Indicators:
- Material availability to production.
- Number of shortages impacting production.
- Inventory turns.
- Excess and obsolete inventory levels.
- Past due purchase orders or supplier deliveries.
- Supplier on-time delivery performance.
- Schedule adherence support.
- Planning data accuracy.
- Premium freight reduction.
- Response time to critical material issues.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing plant environment.
- Frequent interaction with production, warehouse, purchasing, logistics, engineering, and customer planning teams.
- May require availability outside regular business hours to support urgent material issues, production changes, or critical customer requirements.
- Fast-paced environment with changing priorities and high sense of urgency
Preferred Qualifications
- APICS/ASCM certification such as CPIM or CSCP.
- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma knowledge.
- Experience with automotive industry standards.
- Knowledge of electronic components, PCB assemblies, semiconductors, connectors, harnesses, and related materials.
- Experience managing global suppliers and long lead-time components.
