About the Position:
We are looking for a Supplier Development Engineer to join the Green Technologies Purchasing team, reporting directly to the Supplier Quality Manager.
This position is based at our office in Gunma, Japan.
As a Supplier Development Engineer at Marelli, you will be responsible for fostering collaboration with our internal and external partners in the development of components and projects.
Your Responsibilities will be:
- Leading the complete process and product release for purchased components from external suppliers in collaboration with the development team (Project Buyer, Project Manager, R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Logistics, etc.) prior to the start of production.
- Applying Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) methodology.
- Supporting and participating in the Sourcing Process and Project Gate Reviews.
- Delivering required outputs on time, aligned with the customer schedule (component release).
- Working with the Supplier Quality team to manage customer complaints related to supplier responsibility.
- Managing improvement programs with suppliers.
- Actively participating in and supporting sourcing activities.
- Conducting supplier audits and visits as required by development needs.
- Managing supplier escalations.
- Ensuring compliance with the material catalog for new development projects.
- Participating in and leading technical analysis with suppliers.
What Qualifications you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in an industrial field (Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent).
- Strong knowledge in Metals, Plastics, and related manufacturing processes is preferred/recommended.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory; proficiency in Japanese (written and spoken) is also required.
Other skills that we would welcome:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the industrial sector, including at least 2 years in the quality field; experience in supplier quality is highly valued.
- Solid knowledge of stamping, machining, injection molding, and a basic understanding of aluminum, metals, and plastics raw materials.
- Experience with quality tools such as FMEA, Statistical Process Control, process capability analysis, and problem-solving methodologies (including 8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa, Fault Tree Analysis, and experience capitalization).
- Familiarity with quality standards including IATF 16949, as well as environmental, sustainability, and safety requirements.
- Auditing experience.

- Strong teamwork spirit
- Excellent analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to propose solutions, take ownership, perform under pressure, and effectively manage supplier relationships
- Negotiation and persuasion skills; ability to manage meetings efficiently
- In-depth knowledge of new component development processes, including supplier selection, requirements definition, Advanced Product Quality Planning, verification of production capacity, Initial Sample Control Report validation, and Production Part Approval Process; experience in process auditing (qualified auditor license according to VDA 6.3 is preferred)
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite
- Willingness to travel (30–50%)
